CBC News would have us believe that milk is the best source of calcium and that we need it to the tune of 1000 mg a day. Is this true? According to Dr. Berry, this is not only false but dangerous advice to follow.
How many of us have been drinking milk and taking supplements, in an attempt to have strong bones and avoid osteoporosis. But it seems that for most people living in North America, we are being encouraged to have twice as much calcium intake than the World Health Organization recommends. Which on the surface, is not alarming. But when coupled with CBC news attempting to scare people into believing that milk is the most efficient source of calcium and without it, you will need to double your food consumption …
It is rather frustrating that CBC would take this approach to advocating milk. Especially in a culture that is afraid of weight gain. The idea of doubling the amount of food you eat to meet your calcium needs or just drinking an extra glass of milk, milk seems like the obvious choice.
But what about the potential cardiovascular risks that come along with drinking extra milk or taking a calcium supplement. We need to do more research about how extra calcium affects our bodies.
Is the goal of 1000 mg excessive to the point of causing harm? We need more research.
