How Do People Fast – A Personal Story

This is a personal story that answers the question “How do people fast?”. Although I’ve never been particularly attached to food, if you would have asked me a year ago to fast, I would have refused. Fast forward to today, I fast regularly with ease.

Fasting is interesting in that, once you start doing it, you realize it is not really a big deal. It is interesting how you feel surprisingly good, with no hunger, and great clarity.

Our bodies are built to go periods of time without food. I believe that we have gotten away from the natural practice of fasting due to our reliance on technology that keeps food readily available to us.

My journey to fasting was simple. Painless. And very satisfying. I do like to learn new things about myself and it was surprising to learn how easily I adapted to fasting.

Although, I will admit. Not feeling hungry was a key factor. I dislike being hungry and that would have been a deterrent. The ketogenic lifestyle that I had embarked on allowed me to understand my body and do what felt natural. This created the situation where fasting felt “easy”. The hardest part was explaining to family and friends that I was not eating today. Funny where our stumbling blocks come from.

The benefits that I have lived from the ketogenic lifestyle and fasting are great. Aches and pains that I have lived with for years are no longer there. I do credit Keto with most of the improvement. However, I do see the benefits that fasting added.

I feel like I’m rambling a bit but these are my thoughts on my personal fast experience. Questions are welcomed.

Why All the Fuss About Time Restricted Eating, IF, & OMAD

Let’s begin with the obvious. No one can force you to fast. If you want to eat, eat. That being said, I find it crazy how many arguments there are online about fasting.

First of all, fasting is a period of time when you are not eating. What is comical about this is, if you consider that a great majority of people often eat when they are not even hungry, how can we then try to put a time frame on what would be fasting?

So, if fasting is not eating during a time frame when you would normally have eaten, then the length of fast can vary widely. What is known, the longer the fast, the more benefits that you gain from the fast.

Science has told us that our bodies focus most of its energy on managing the most important processes before lesser important processes. Processing food is a very important and energy intensive process.

The key to allowing other, very important, processes to take center stage is to have periods of time when we are not eating. The more time we give these other processes, the more health we can attain. So if you want to improve your health, fasting is another tool at your disposal.

There’s No Such Thing as Easy Weight Loss

I’m saying it right from the start. Stop looking for short cuts. You will only set yourself up for failure. Weight loss is a process of allowing your body to use appropriate fuels to power itself while also healing any damage from the inappropriate fuel sources you were previously using. Believing that you can heal your body in a few weeks after years of damage is unrealistic.

It is so important to be kind to yourself and your body during your weight loss. By beginning the process understanding that this will take a year or two, you prepare yourself for the challenges that will be in front of you.

You see, you will have to be prepared to eat well every day for the rest of your life. And you will need to be prepared to stick to your new eating habits at birthday parties, holidays, and anniversaries. You are not only solving some metabolic issues that brought you to this weight but also creating a new way of looking at food.

This is important. Our bodies are precious. You need to consider what you are using as fuel. Eating something that is nutrient poor because it tastes great still means that you just asked your body to manage a bunch of carbs that are toxic for a momentary taste satisfaction. Your body can only protect you by storing that as fat, which is expressly against the goal you seem to have for yourself.

If weight loss is truly your goal, you need to plan for better eating and understand what better eating truly is, in order to be successful. Prioritize your health and you will see success.
